Tier 2 behavior supports are often an overlooked and underdeveloped component of MTSS. Without Tier 2, referrals for Tier 3 interventions and special education services increases. Students who benefit from Tier 2 interventions (i.e., approximately 15% of students at your school) are displaying mild-moderate misbehavior, impulsivity, disorganization and other disruptive behaviors. These students are repeatedly making behavioral errors, not abiding by school rules, and landing in the front office, because they have YET to learn essential social, emotional, and/or academic skills. Check-In Check-Out and Related Interventions are evidence-based practices that provide these students with an “extra dose” of support. Coaching, feedback, and motivation are all used to help these students practice the essential social, emotional, or academic skills they need to learn. These interventions are efficient, data-based, and intended to be implemented for a short period of time. Imagine Tier 2 teams implementing effective interventions with at-risk students AND showing up to PLC Meetings with graphs to support data-based decisions!
