Trauma-Focused Training

Trauma Sensitive Schools: Evolving Perspectives on Student Behavior and Learning

Trauma Sensitive Schools (TSS) is a five-module learning series designed for educators to support them in understanding childhood trauma and its impact on student learning and behavior. When 2/3 of children are exposed to a traumatic event before age 18, this information is critical for those supporting our students.

Mandated Reporter Training

All educators are mandated reporters, and this online training module outlines the procedures for reporting, including warning signs of child maltreatment, information on where and how to report suspected maltreatment, and guidance on what comes after a report is made to the appropriate entity.

Suicide Prevention Training

Question, Persuade, Refer: Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training

Question, Persuade, Refer is an evidence-based suicide prevention protocol, also termed as a gatekeeper training, with a mission to save lives and reduce suicidal behaviors by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. 

People trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Gatekeepers can be anyone, but include all those who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide, like school personnel and community leaders.

Suicide Prevention Training & Readiness for Schools (STARS)

The STARS Program is the first multi-component school substance use and suicide prevention training program for North Dakota and is modeled on existing evidenced-based trainings and practices. Each STARS training is geared toward a specific professional role so that everyone working in your school can help promote student safety and mental well-being. STARS Training is currently offered at no cost to ND schools.

The STARS Program includes three distinct components:

  1. A half-day interactive workshop for school leadership teams to develop building and district-wide policies, procedures, and implementation plans for substance use and suicide prevention.
  2. A 1-2 hour gatekeeper training for teachers and non-clinical school staff on identifying warning signs of substance use and suicide and following building and district protocol to connect those at risk to additional care.
  3. A 3-4 hour training for school behavioral health professionals on the clinical elements of substance use and suicide risk screening, intervention, and referral. The training includes instruction on the C-SSRS and CRAFFT 2.1+N screening tools, the Safety Planning Intervention for suicide risk, the Brief Negotiated Interview for substance use risk, and several methods of referral, follow-up, and monitoring.

School Crisis Planning & Intervention

PREPaRE School Crisis Prevention & Intervention

PREPaRE Workshop 1 is designed for school leadership teams, supporting development of comprehensive School Crisis Plans.
PREPaRE Workshop 2 is designed for school-based mental health professionals and provides direct instruction on crisis response.

PREPaRE is the only comprehensive, nationally available training curriculum developed for educators by educators– and is a product of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) as part of its decades long leadership in supporting school crisis prevention and response capabilities at the local level.

SWIS Data Collection System

SWIS by PBIS Apps is a tool for collecting and analyzing universal behavior data on every student. If your building is looking to support its behavior referral process and/or learn more about where and when behavior incidents occur, SWIS may be a good fit for you. Relationship Mapping Protocol

The Harvard Relationship-Mapping Protocol is a simple but meaningful process designed to help educators identify students who could benefit from supportive relationships with adults in school, and through the process, connect every student with at least one trusting and supportive staff member.

Poverty

Poverty Simulation

The Poverty Simulation is an interactive immersion group experience designed to bridge the gap from misconception to understanding of the realities of living in poverty. In this simulation, participants are assigned to a “family” where they face common challenges and scenarios present when living week-to-week in a low-income household. The objective of the simulation is to promote awareness, increase empathy, and inspire local change.

Self-Paced Training

Classroom WISE

Classroom WISE (Well-Being Information & Strategies for Educators) is self-paced, six-module online course for educators developed by the Mental Health Technology Transfer Center (MHTTC) Network in partnership with the National Center for School Mental Heatlh. ClassroomWISE is focused on educator mental health literacy, and each module presents concrete, universal approaches for promoting student mental health and creating safe and supportive classroom environments.

Check & Connect

Check & Connect is an evidence-based intervention intended for K-12 students who show warning signs of disengagement and are at risk of dropping out. Check & Connect pairs each student with a caring, trained Mentor who utilizes student data to create personalized, timely interventions that help solve problems, build skills, and enhance competence. This program was developed out of the University of Minnesota and endorsed by the North Dakota Full-Service Community Schools Consortium.

Avel eCare School Health & School Behavioral Health

The mission of the ND eCare School Health and School Behavioral Health programs is to improve access to healthcare for underserved and geographically disadvantaged K-12 students in North Dakota. The goal of the programs is to minimize health-related barriers to learning by providing safe, effective care from a licensed practitioner via telehealth.

Sources of Strength

Sources of Strength is a radically strength-based, upstream approach to suicide prevention that harnesses the power of Peer Leaders and caring adults in a school community to increase help-seeking behaviors, build upon protective factors, and promote connections.

Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools

Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) is a school-based intervention designed to reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and behavioral problems, and to improve functioning, grades and attendance, peer and parent support, and coping skills for students in grades 5-12. CBITS can be delivered by school personnel or as a collaboration between school personnel and a trained behavioral health professional over the course of 10 sessions.

Sanford Behavioral Health Services

Sanford’s behavioral health partnership with North Dakota schools is intended to be a Tier 3 support, complementing an upstream approach to arrive at a full continuum of support for behavioral health in schools. Through this partnership, students whose behavioral health needs exceed the expertise and resources of educators, include school counselors, are able to meet with a clinician from Sanford Health right in their own school, eliminating barriers such as transportation and time.

Beat the Odds

Beat the Odds is an evidence-based and trauma-informed program that integrates activities from group drumming and group counseling to build core assets such as focusing and listening, team building, leadership, expressing feelings, managing anger/stress, empathy, and gratitude. Beat the Odds can be implemented by school personnel and used with students in grades K-12.

EmpowerU is a highly personalized, self-paced online non-academic essential skill-development program designed to fill a gap by providing Tier 1 or Tier 2 support. By pairing interactive daily lessons with one-on-one support from online experts in adolescent mental health, EmpowerU equips students with the skills to build persistence, resilience, and success.
